Biological robots

Came across this commentary on biologically powered robots. I’m sure that the blogosphere has commented on this in depth already, but it left me pondering. If machine is starting to integrate to biology (medical augmentation, Emotiv), biology is integrating to machine (biological robots), machines are beginning to integrate to each other (semantic web?), and biology is being manipulated by machine (genome project et al) we seem to be on the threshold of new species.

Of course this is not new thinking – expect that the speed at which we shift from fiction to potential reality is dramatically surpassing my expectations.

Fiction often presents the brave new singularity in one manifestation, one machine, one computer, one system – but it seems to me that the future uber-organism is not outside of ourselves. The potential exists for it to be … us.
